my first impressions was that they both had something to do with the black markets within the area and that Lola never washes or brushes her hair. After the first scene i new that their relationship was strong and that they genuinly loved each other.
Lola is the controlive one in the relationship and is also relied on for all the answers when Manni stuffs up, which in my opinion he must do alot.
Manni also panics very easily and his head is not all there meaning that he doesnt have all the brains to work byh himself in the black market scene.

The shots of Manni in the phonebox really 'losing' it are great for portraying his complete loss of control and panic - especially when he is swearing in German!
