I think that the director used the varied narative techniques to put accross his storyline and show that it is not real life and that it is all made up but it is true that one persons fate can be changed by another persons choice.
The style he created is unique and i like the fact that it is not like other films, this film is not dragged out as the series of events change everytime, therefore making it more interesting.
The animation showed that the storyline was not true but it didnt really go with the rest of the film at all.

You are quite right - the animation sequence is not real - highlighting the fact that we cannot really turn back the clock and do things over again - no matter how much we'd like to.
